LSAT Good Wishes!

9/23/09
Revision Editing wishes everyone taking the LSAT this Saturday, September 26, 2009, the very best! Sleep well the two nights before the test, and eat a good breakfast the morning of the test. If you're nervous, breathe deeply to get oxygen flowing throughout your body and brain.

If you've already taken the LSAT, then look at your personal statement again, and strip out all the generalities, such as, "I will bring about positive changes to the lives of many." "I believe all children need to have the opportunities a strong education provides." "As an immigrant woman, I can relate to others who have overcome difficult obstacles." The best personal statements are dense with specific details.

Watch those introductory phrases!

Hi everyone, and Happy Labor Day! I know today is supposed to be a break from work, but it's also a great day to labor over those personal statements. One advice columnist I read suggested applicants spend at least 40 hours drafting, revising, and revising again their personal statement. After reading many personal statements this application season, I have noticed many applicants forget to include a comma after an introductory phrase or introductory dependent clause. Here's how to do it correctly:
"After reading many personal statements this application season, [comma] I have noticed many applicants forget to include a comma after an introductory phrase."
and
"If I wrote that sentence without a comma after 'season,' [comma] then it would be incorrect."
The admissions committee members like correct comma usage.

Also remember this great anonymous quote: "Proofread carefully to see if you any words out."

Application Season Begins

Hello everyone! It's already the end of August, and many law schools begin accepting applications tomorrow! I remember one law school admissions dean joked, "It's good to be one of the first to get your application in, but don't be the very first." Many law schools have rolling admissions, so the earlier you get your application in, the better chance you have of being accepted. The competition only gets harder the later your submit your application. Remember to use your personal statement to show you possess the qualities of intellectual excellence, leadership, friendliness, and the ability to view a situation from multiple perspectives. Give specific evidence to support every claim you make about your accomplishments and attributes. By constructing a strong and persuasive argument for why the admissions committee members should accept you, and presenting that argument in lively prose (stories work well), you're well on your way to admission.
